This department is derived from institute of image recognition and artificial intelligence and department of control science and engineering. The former, which was founded by the ministry of education and the ministry of aviation in HUST in 1978, mainly researches intoimage recognition and artificial intelligence, integrating scientific research and graduate teaching. Having made unremitting efforts to realize the state goal of aeronautics andastronautics and information technology and to develop basic and applied technology since its establishment three decades ago, it enjoys a good reputation in China. At present, it has authorized master and doctoral degree programs of majors like pattern recognition and intelligent systems，Navigation, Guidance and Control and so on, and has established apostdoctoral research station and a national key l of multi-spectral information processing technology. Well-known in intelligent processing of aerospace, the latter, with a history offorty years, has a ministerial key laboratory of image recognition and intelligent control,National Research Base for National Economic Mobilization Simulation and Practice and so on. Also, it always ranks top ten in first level discipline appraisal by the ministry of education. With various authorized degree programs at different levels, it mainly focuses oncomplex system control theory, decision analysis and support, control and intelligent robot, integrated control and computer network technology, information detection and identification, aircraft control and condition monitoring, biological information processing and so on.

With an excellent teaching and researching team at different age, there is in total 31 full-time teachers, including 10 professors, 17 associate professor and 4 lecturers, which contains one in the Thousand Talents program and one in the Program for New Century Excellent Talents.
This department has shouldered hundreds of programs at different levels in image recognition and artificial intelligence and department of control science and engineering and has been given plenty awards at all levels. Teachers in our department have published hundreds of papers in influential academic journals and conferences at home and abroad, two monographs and have obtained over fifty patents. Over the past five years, over 8o million Yuan has been used in R&D, which comes from different funds like 973 program，national nature science fund for major programs, national key technology support programand so on.
Having formed a sound teaching and management system for undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students, this department is the first to have pre-defense for doctoral dissertationand to conduct dual blind review mechanism across the country. In the meantime, we make more efforts to improve post-graduate textbook.
With many excellent graduate and post dissertation at school and provincial level, our graduates constitute the backbone and powerhouse in leading IT and aerospaceenterprises，leaving our school a leader in terms of graduate professional standards, training quality, the employment rate and so on.
Based on the laboratories in our department and other support, a first-class research and teaching platform at hand provides us not only a top research environment but also a favorable condition for public services.
(1)Complete space for teaching and research. The existing laboratory space is over 2000 square meters.
(2)Advanced teaching and research equipment. There are equipment worth of 40 million Yuan such as visible light imaging sensor, infrared imaging sensors, ladar， six degrees of freedom manipulator, three-axis tracking turntable, scalar network analyzer, vector network analyzers, noise figure meter, a logic analyzer, spectrum analyzer, SGI workstations, MultiGen, simulation software （Vega and other ）and EDA software. 40 million Yuan more will be spent purchasing 92 sets of equipment and software for the national key laboratory.
(3)Favorable conditions for conducting experiments. With upgrading and optimizing experiment courses for postgraduate students, we have taken many undergraduates of familiar majors (electronics and information, computer, automation, life sciences, optical engineering and so on) to conduct researches (productive practice) and graduation projects that help to improve students' hands-on ability as teachers are quite familiar with their teaching.
(4)Abundant documentations. There is a professional reference room with journals, reference books and manuals and a total of 18,000 books in Chinese and English. Free access is available to major databases at home and abroad。
(5)Drawing on advanced education management modes at home and abroad. For years,great efforts have been made to ensure the teaching quality by making and optimizing thetraining programs for master and PhD students of pattern recognition and intelligent systems, improving teaching staff and updating textbooks as well as popularizing frontier researchconcepts. In the meantime, equal emphasis has been given to theory and practice.
(6)Multiple platforms for scientific research and academic exchange. The problem-solving ability of graduate students has been improved remarkably as they have participated in numerous national research projects through which they obtain their research capacity.
There is a favorable academic atmosphere as ten staffs have been either visiting scholars oroverseas students for short- or long –term, many prestigious professors have been invited to deliver speeches, and academic exchanges and substantive international cooperation have been carried forward. Besides, two outstanding overseas scholars will be hired to work for a short term on campus and Multispectral Image Processing and Pattern Recognition International Conference of SPIE(International Society for Optical Engineering, the United States as the registered venue) will be held every two year.
