System Science and Engineering major of our university was established in 1978, being part of the first batch of system engineering units in China, and it set up the system engineering research institution in 1988, with Pro. Chen Ting being the founder of the discipline. This discipline is included in the first batch in the country to confer master and doctor degrees approved by Academic Degree Committee of the State Council and it also has mobile postdoctoral station. The System Engineering Society of Hubei province and OperationalResearch Society of Hubei province are attached to this discipline. It obtained the right to confer doctor degrees of system analysis and integration (the second-class discipline of “system science” discipline), and it also became the unit to confer doctor degrees of science and engineering. In 2001, this discipline was selected to be a key national discipline and it was selected once again in 2007. In April 2013, science and engineering department was established.

Disciplinary Orientation

       This unit has persisted in basing on science subjects, regarding complex social and economical technology systems as research objects, sticking to integrate system science and control science and closely uniting theories and practice. It has fixed decision-making science, optimized theory and complex system theory as the disciplinary basis , and logistics system, engineering project management, environment and resources, public transportation and public security as main social service objects. With the efforts of several generations, especially the development of last ten years, following stable disciplinary orientations have been formed:

●Decision-making theory, methods and techniques faced up with social and economical technology systems: research directions include decision-making methods and decision support techniques, economical technology analysis and resource allocation, behavioral decision theory and application, public safety emergency decision-making;

●Optimization and control of large-scale projects and and business systems orientated by logistics: research directions include analysis and optimization of logistics system, project management of large-scale infrastructure projects, business planning and production planning and control;

●Complex system theory combined system science and control science: research directions include dynamic behavior analysis and control of complex system, intelligent control of neural network,  modeling analysisof memristive system and its application in intelligent information processing;

● System analysis and integration orientated by information: research directions include complex system modeling and simulation, cluster control of multi-agent system, intelligent identification and calculation, biological calculating, transportation planning and dispatching.

Academic Team and Academic Exchange

       This discipline has formed an academic team with excellent research levels, a reasonable structure combining of old, middle-aged and young. There are 11 professors and doctoral supervisors, 14 associated professors, among whom 1 is the Yangtze River scholar Professor; 1 is chair professor; 2 are winners of national outstanding youth fund; 1 is selected as a candidate in national pacesetter project in the new century; 3 three are selected as excellent talents in the new century by the Ministry of Education. There is rich academic environment in this unit. More than 20 persons in the teaching team has respectively visited or studied abroad in short or long term. More than 30 prestigious professors at home and abroad and in our university are invited to hold academic lectures every year. It has hired 4 excellent overseas scholars to work in HUST for short period every year. 2 to 3 international and domestic academic conferences are held every year. It has established stable channels for international academic exchanges and carried out substantial international cooperation with over 20 famous universities overseas. It encourages studying graduates to study abroad by short visits or joint training, thus intensifying international view of scientific research.

Scientific Research

       System engineering is a basic discipline. This unit has attached importance to fundamental research of theories, such as decision-making science, optimization and complex system for a long time. Up to now, it has undertaken more than 80 national natural science fund projects, among which 5 are major projects of national funds or key research project plans. And 5 of them have won the first prize of provincial natural science; 2 have won the second prize of provincial natural science. More than 100 theoretical achievements have published in well-known journals, such as IEEE Trans. on Automatic Control, IEEE Trans. on Circuits and Systems, IEEE Trans. on Neural Networks, IEEE Trans. on Systems Man and Cybernetics, IEEE Trans. on Fuzzy Systems, Physical Review E, Automatica, Neural Networks, Neural Computation, European Journal of Operational Research, Expert Systems with Applications, Journal of Economic Theory, Social Choice, Management Science.

       The scientific research of this discipline is based on serving national and regional economical construction and social development; especially in the fields of large-scale projects, electricity market, national economy mobilization, corporation production, public security, public transportation, public resources and national defense construction, it has obtained a large number of scientific achievements which have been applied successfully, accompanied with huge economical and social benefits. 5 of them have successively been awarded National Prize for Progress in Science and Technology and the first prize of Provincial and Ministerial Level Science and Technology Progress Award. In recent five years, the total volume of scientific research funds has reached 40 million yuan. The fund origins mainly include 973 project,  Natural Science Foundation of China(including key projects, outstanding youth fund, surface projects, youth fund and international cooperation ect.), 863 project, national defense key fund, national sci-tech support plan, innovation team of Ministry of Education, provincial and ministerial scientific research project, large-scale projects and scientific cooperation projects with companies.

Talents Cultivation

       This unit has set up a relatively perfect system for cultivating and managing postgraduates, forming a complete cultivation system of masters and doctors.  This discipline takes the lead in implementing thesis pre-defense of doctor degrees in HUST and the evaluation system of double-blind review in the whole country. In the meantime, it intensifies research on teaching materials for postgraduates, three of them being elected as “textbooks for graduates”recommended by Ministry of Education. It establishes the undergraduate program of logistics system engineering in line with social needs of logistics talents, which sets a precedent for cultivating bachelor’s degree in engineering of system engineering. Confronted with social needs of automation talents in the new era, in the united arrangement of the college, this unit is responsible for cultivating undergraduates of major C in automation, aiming at cultivatin
